Bradley Manning Nobel Peace Prize Nomination 2013

February 1st 2013 the entire parliamentary group of The Movement in the Icelandic Parliament, the Pirates of the EU; representatives from the Swedish Pirate Party, the former Secretary of State in Tunisia for Sport & Youthnominated Private Bradley Manning for the Nobel Peace Prize. Following is the reasoning we sent to the committee explaining why we felt compelled to nominate Private Bradley Manning for this important recognition of an individual effort to have an impact for peace in our world. The lengthy personal statement to the pre-trial hearing February 28th by Bradley Manning in his own words validate that his motives were for the greater good of humankind.

Our letter to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee

Reykjavík, Iceland 1st of February 2013

Dear Norwegian Nobel Committee,

We have the great honour of nominating Private First Class Bradley Manning for the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.

Manning is a soldier in the United States army who stands accused of releasing hundreds of thousands of documents to the whistleblower website WikiLeaks. The leaked documents pointed to a long history of corruption, war crimes, and a lack of respect for the sovereignty of other democratic nations by the United States government in international dealings.

These revelations have fueled democratic uprisings around the world, including a democratic revolution in Tunisia. According to journalists, his alleged actions helped motivate the democratic Arab Spring movements, shed light on secret corporate influence on the foreign and domestic policies of European nations, and most recently contributed to the Obama Administration agreeing to withdraw all U.S.troops from the occupation in Iraq.

Bradley Manning has been incarcerated for more then 1000 days by the U.S. Government. He spent over ten months of that time period in solitary confinement, conditions which expert worldwide have criticized as torturous. Juan Mendez, the United Nations' Special Rapporteur on Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment, has repeatedly requested and been denied a private meeting with Manning to assess his conditions.

The documents made public by WikiLeaks should never have been kept from public scrutiny. The revelations - including video documentation of an incident in which American soldiers gunned down Reuters journalists in Iraq - have helped to fuel a worldwide discussion about the overseas engagements of the United States, civilian casualties of war and rules of engagement. Citizens worldwide owe a great debt to the WikiLeaks whistleblower for shedding light on these issues, and so we urge the Committee to award this prestigious prize to accused whistleblower Bradley Manning.

We can already be reasonably certain that Bradley Manning will not have a fair trial as the head of State, the USA President Mr. Barack Obama, stated over a year ago on record that Manning is guilty.

Sincerely,

Birgitta Jónsdóttir, Member of Parliament for the Movement, Iceland
Christian Engström, Member of the European Parliament for the Pirate Party, Sweden
Amelia Andersdottir, Member of the European Parliament for the Pirate Party, Sweden
Margrét Tryggvadóttir, Member of Parliament for the Movement, Iceland
Þór Saari, Member of Parliament for the Movement, Iceland
Slim Amamou, former Secretary of State for Sport & Youth (2011), Tunisia

  4. How do we add our names to the nomination? I don't know if the Nobel Peace Prize has ever had millions of people worldwide nominate someone -- if they haven't then now is a good time to change the world for the better.

  5. Guy, only Members of parliaments and academians can nominate. The guidelines for who can nominate can be found at the official website. I know that there is a petition floating around in support for the 2012 nomination. Perhaps you could set up a similar petition for this years peace prize? Would be great if we could get a strong message through, since Manning has now formally pledged guilty to leak the material.

    Awesome
Bradley Manning is a very good choice.
If possible, please take Obama's peace prize away from him. He has thoroughly proven that he's either a corrupt mass-murderer or he's doing the will of corrupt mass-murderers. In either case, it hurts the integrity of the prize if such a person has one.

I truly hope PFC Manning receives this award because I cannot imagine anyone who is more deserving of it.

This young soldier saw the injustices taking place in the name of the American people that were never made known to the American public - or anyone else outside of a corrupt group and with Bush's dismissal and refusal to allow REAL REPORTER WAR CORRESPONDENCES ON SITE, NO AMERICAN WOULD LEARN THE TRUTH!

He is an honorable soldier, an honorable man, and a hero that everyone everywhere should take note of because without truth in the way a war is run, there can be no guarantees of lack of misconduct or the persecution of those who performed the misdeeds.

There is guilt in Bush's War; however, BUSH IS THE ONE WHO IS GUILTY - NOT PFC MANNING! The only thing this young man is guilty of is telling the truth and the last time I checked, that was a virtue - not a crime!

    Dear Norwegian Nobel Committee,

We have the great honour of nominating Private First Class Chelsea (Bradley) Manning for the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize.

Manning was a soldier in the United States army who was accused and convicted of releasing hundreds of thousands of documents to the whistleblower website WikiLeaks. The leaked documents reveal a long history of internal corruption, war crimes, and a lack of respect for the sovereignty of other democratic nations by the United States Government in international dealings and US Armed Forces in execution of military action.

These revelations have fueled democratic uprisings around the world including a democratic revolutions in Egypt and Tunisia. According to analysis by foreign policy experts and journalists Mannings information releases helped motivate other democratic Arab Spring movements, shed light on secret corporate influence on the foreign and domestic policies of European nations, and recently contributed to the Obama Administration agreeing to withdraw U.S.troops from the occupation in Iraq.

The documents Manning exposed via WikiLeaks have enabled the kind of public scrutiny of US and other Western powers foreign policy never before known in history. The war related revelations - including video documentation of an incident in which American soldiers gunned down Reuters journalists in Iraq - have helped to fuel a worldwide discussion about the overseas engagements of the United States, civilian casualties of war and rules of engagement.

For the first time new generations of world citizens relatively unexposed to war were shown the brutality and effect on civilian populations of even the most managed military action. The revelations solidified unease amoung US and other Western populations around military strikes and in particular premptive action, hardening attitudes against the sort of poorly conceived and orchestrated regime change that a decade on see hundreds dying weekly in Iraq. This public sentiment has proved to be a political barrier that may have saved Syria from a similar fate.

Manning was incarcerated pretrial for more than 1000 days by the U.S. Government, over ten months of that time period in solitary confinement in conditions which experts worldwide have criticized as torturous. Juan Mendez, the United Nations' Special Rapporteur on Torture and Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading Treatment or Punishment, repeatedly requested and was denied a private meeting with Manning to assess detention conditions.

Manning was convicted and sentenced to 35 years imprisonment in military prison for what essentially were information releases aimed at motivating much needed improvements US foreign policy and military conduct. Amnesty International and The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have written to President Obama requesting Mannings pardon and release. Due to its length the sentence the case will be automatically sent to the Army Court of Criminal Appeals where Manning may find increased leniency or possibly face greater punishment.

The poignant writings of Manning leave no doubt that her actions were motivated by a wish to prevent uncessessary war and the suffering it can cause.

Citizens worldwide and the cause of peace owe a great debt to Chelsea (Bradley) Manning and the WikiLeaks whistleblower website for shedding light on these issues. We urge the Committee to award this prestigious prize to military whistleblower Chelsea Manning.

    Sincerely,
